Cello teaching

An Overview
Cello lessons with a difference

Develop a solid cello technique through improvisation, folk, jazz and world music. Explore cello as both a bass and rhythm instrument.

Drawing on my 30-year career playing the cello and composing for theatre, dance, storytelling, and film, I offer beginners to Grade 8 a uniquely creative approach to learning the cello. I also provide traditional classical lessons.
I am flexible regarding the length and frequency of lessons and will do my best to fit around your schedule.

If you don’t have your own instrument, I have several basic cellos in various sizes available to rent at a low cost.
My teaching method
I will play my cello alongside you, using it to demonstrate correct technique or to accompany improvisations and pieces you are learning.

Through my recent studies in cello and the Alexander Technique, I have developed a relaxed and natural cello technique. While I am not an Alexander Technique teacher, three years of lessons have influenced my teaching. I can help you free your body so that your playing becomes easeful and elegant.

Creating a positive learning environment is my top priority. Having experienced stress and anxiety as a learner, I understand the challenges of learning an instrument and the importance of creating a safe, supportive space for effective learning.
Specific non-classical techniques
Over the years of performing and composing in non-classical settings, I have developed some cello techniques to broaden your cello playing. These include:

-
Using the bow rhythmically.

-
Playing pizzicato bass lines, and

-
Creating off-beat chordal accompaniments.

I also draw on my experience with world music traditions and can incorporate colours from these traditions into your lesson.
Teaching Children
I offer creative lessons where we learn through tailor-made games and imaginary play to make the lessons fun and interesting.
With years of working with children, I have developed a child-led approach, following their interests to support their learning. For example:

-
Use notes as stepping stones to develop music-reading skills with the aid of a metronome.

-
Write songs together and play them on the cello.

-
Learn accompaniments and melodies from the child’s favourite artists.

-
Use dance to internalise rhythms.

-
Create an “aeroplane runway” to learn the bowing action.
'Jamming for the Terrified'
Many of my pupils join one of my Jamming for the Terrified classes. These classes offer a safe space to further explore what is learnt in one-to-one lessons with other musicians and other instruments.
