Current Projects
With Devil’s Violin having come to an end, I find myself in an exciting period of transition. My studies are enriching my cello playing, singing, and composition, and I’m looking forward to re-emerging into the world with some interesting projects.
When the Morning Stars Sang
Storytelling (Hugh Lupton) and cello

Demons, archangels & djinns; hoopoes, swallows, fish, donkeys and maggots; kings, queens, merchants, fools and the voice from the heart of the whirlwind all contend in this rich interweaving of Apocryphal and Old Testament mystery tales drawing from Jewish, Islamic and Christian sources.

Audiences will encounter Adam and Eve, Solomon and Sheba, Tobias and the Angel, Job and his Comforters … stories that underpin our culture … told in the picture language of the heart, with vigour and humour, with rich language and deep magic.
This is a chance to shake off old habitual pieties and hear these ancient tales with fresh ears.
In this performance master-storyteller Hugh Lupton is joined by acclaimed cellist Sarah Moody whose wonderful playing is inspired by the music of all three Abrahamic traditions, reminding us that at the core of these cultures (that have been at loggerheads for most of the last thousand years) lies a shared mythology.
This is a gripping, accessible and moving performance aimed at adult audiences (not suitable for under 14s).
“Totally spellbinding … stunning … transcendent … sublime … the evening will stay with me for a long time … the combination of both your talents created a magical performance”

Moody Loops
Moody Loops is me with my cello and voice performing solo with a loop box*. Many pieces are an eclectic mix of compositions from my work in theatre and multi arts.
I’ve performed this at festivals such as
Spike Cello Festival and Up in the Clouds and at music nights such as Undergrowth Bristol.
I’m presently developing new material to add to my set, which I plan to be airing soon.

*the faithful Boss RC 20 for all you geeks!
“Having run folk music nights for the last 10 years, I can honestly say Sarah’s performances have been among the very best I’ve seen, talked about long after by our dedicated and discerning audience.”
Jet McDonald, Music Night Organiser, Undergrowth

Atmos is me on cello with vocalist Juliet Russell. It's powerful vocals and evocative strings with a percussive edge.

Atmos’ original sound is inspired by the Balkans, Africa, Middle East and Celtic traditions. Using loopers we layer up rich harmonies and compulsive rhythms to create an unforgettable heart opening experience. Our ambient sound and simple set up makes ATMOS as suitable for on stage performances as for site specific, natural environments and churches.
“Blissed out a capella”, The Independent
Juliet Russell’s voice has been described as “brilliantly haunting” by Stage Magazine and her compositions as “beautiful and mesmerising” by Musicians Union Magazine.
The Andrew Christie Quartet
The Andrew Christie Quartet is jazz pianist Andrew Christie, double bassist, Jon Short, drummer Greg White and myself on cello. Together we arrange Andrew’s haunting compositions into a cinematic, semi-improvised, ambient performance.
“Original compositions that seamlessly weave modern jazz elements into an ambient, cinematic underscore.” Tony Benjamin, Bristol Beacon
Bristol Ceilidh Quartet
The Bristol Ceilidh Quartet is three English folk fiddlers – Alison Rowley, Deb Chalmers and Nonny Tabbush – and myself on cello. The group makes a big string sound with loads of energy and drive. It immerses me in playing rhythmic bass lines and I enjoy watching the lively response in the dancers’ feet.
Why not come along and have a dance? 28th Jan 26 at Seend Centre, Melksham
“One of the most energetic and percussive ceilidh bands playing anywhere right now- their gigs are unmissable.” Ed Barrow, Bristol Ceilidh
“Gorgeous sound and arrangements, great pace for dancing … now one of our favourite ceilidh bands!” Penny Allen, Meltdown Ceilidhs
